Douglas Arnold Bird was born November 12, 1913, son of Alfred Edward Bird and Lily Bradfield. Douglas grew up in William St, Townsville, QLD, Australia. He met music teacher Gladys Myrtle Rahmann, and the two married in the Maryborough Wesley Church on 15 April 1939. Together they had two children, Kevin Douglas and Darrel Arthur.
